Police State

It always bother me that the police and firefighters union were not included in Wisconsin Governor Walker's budget plan. After all, since they endorsed him in the election, it looked like political payback, and probably was, though there is also just a chance he decided it might not be a good idea to risk a massive walkout of police and firefighters.

Whatever was the reason, it seems to have backfired, since the police have now come out in support of the public employees unions in opposition to Walker's plan.

That's not really that great a surprise when you consider that police unions, by and large, are generally left-leaning organizations, as are the vast majority of unions, and that they tend to support the Democratic Party more often than not. Let's face facts, the police tend to support the kinds of gun control laws favored by Democrats (or to be more precise, by the judges Democrats appoint to do their dirty work).

On the other hand, the rank-and-file among the police officers in the country might want to ask themselves, when was the last time a Republican came out foresquare in favor of reduced sentencing for cop killers, and other violent criminals they are far more likely to put out on the streets, and much earlier than Republicans.

Walker should take this opportunity to revisit this part of his plan. It's never a good idea to show favoritism towards one group over another.
